Arlington Colts (9-2 / 5-1 in 4-5A) – The Colts continue to have an unforgettable season with their sights set on playing at the Alamodome this December. Their latest victory came on the road out in Odessa at Ratliff Stadium against one of the top teams out of West Texas, the District 2-5A champion Odessa Bronchos. The Colts dialed up the offense once again and scored 70 points on a defense that came into the game allowing just 15.5 points per contest. QB Matt Joeckel completed 76 percent of his passes and threw for 237 yards along with four touchdowns. Joeckel also was a dual threat as he finished the game with 113 yards on the ground on 20 carries and scored two rushing touchdowns. WR Brandon Lewis knifed through Odessa’s defense and hauled in five catches for 118 yards including two receiving touchdowns as the Colts mustered up 524 total yards of offense. In order to keep their playoff hopes alive, Arlington will need a strong effort from the offensive line, and QB Matt Joeckel will need time to survey the field and find open receivers within Coppell’s extremely athletic and physical secondary.
Coppell Cowboys (11-1 / 4-1 in 6-5A) – The Cowboys’ offense averages scoring 39 points per game but only needed 14 to defeat the Plano East Panthers last week. Coppell’s defensive coaching staff put together another terrific game plan as it pitched the only shutout of the day at Cowboys Stadium, and Coppell’s fourth shutout of the season. The Cowboy defense forced Panther back-up quarterback Brandon Wesley to throw three interceptions in the contest, making it 36 turnovers forced on the season. The Coppell linebackers did a great job of slowing down Brandon Lewis as the PESH running back finished the game with only 52 yards on the ground. Offensively, QB Hayden Hawk made smart decisions with his feet accounting for two rushing touchdowns and the Cowboys’ only scores of the game, and WR Jeff Johnson proved to everyone that he could still be effective under the massive Plano East secondary after hauling in six catches for 109 yards. The Cowboys have now won six straight ball games dating back to the 24-6 loss to Southlake Carroll to open district play. The Cowboy’s coaching staff will need to be on their game to be able to come up with a strategy to limit a Colts’ offense that is very similar to their own. The main objective for Coppell is the defensive line’s ability to put pressure on Arlington QB Matt Joeckel, ipso facto to do what the Cowboys defense has done all season: force interceptions to change the face of the game.
