#7 Trinity Trojans (8-2 / 7-0 in 5-5A) – After two early non-district losses to Cedar Hill and Allen, the Trojans bounced back by outscoring their opponents 305-66 in district play. As usual, Head Coach Steve Lineweaver has produced an extremely physical and very talented squad that plays old-school football. Sensational tailback Tevin Williams has been slowed by injuries all season but has still managed to rush for 822 yards and nine touchdowns in 2009. In Williams’ absence, Terrance Tusan has emerged as a playmaker in the rushing game after posting 668 rushing yards on just 80 carries along with 12 touchdowns in just eight games. Quarterback Willie Hubbard has stepped up tremendously in the passing game by adding 15 touchdowns and throwing only three interceptions all year. Hubbard has established a strong connection with wideout Brandon Carter, who leads all Trojan receivers with 21 catches for 525 yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, linebackers Sione Moeakiola, Paul Olie and Jonathan Yenga play a very physical brand of football and have been the key to shutting down some of the area’s top offensive units. In order to win its eighth straight game, Trinity will need to establish time-consuming scoring drives that ultimately keep the Flower Mound offense on the sideline.
Flower Mound Jaguars (6-4 / 2-3 in 6-5A) – The Jaguars are the fourth place team from District 6-5A and enter the playoffs reeling after three straight losses. However, their only losses this season were to the three other teams from the district that will play in the postseason. Head Coach Cody Vanderford’s team has been led all season by the play of Quarterback Paul Millard who finished the regular season throwing for 3,500 yards and 31 touchdowns. Halfback Hunter Lee adds plenty of versatility out of the backfield for the Jags, rushing for 653 yards and nine touchdowns while adding 72 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns. Wideouts Josh Brake and Hunter Miller create a nice tandem in the receiving corps as each has combined to haul in over 50 receptions. The key to victory for the Jags will be the defense’s ability to slow down Trinity’s overpowering running game while getting off the field on key third down situations. The undersized Jaguar defense led by Stephen Sumpter, Michael Strodtman and Tom Benet must swarm to the football and create turnovers in order for Flower Mound to be successful.
